1. This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

this is not my hat by jon klassen

Jon Klassen is simply a picture book genius when it comes to creating beautiful books that appeal to young and old alike. In this story, a small sly fish thinks his secretive steal will remain just that, a secret. But, his loose lips lead to his demise in this funny book of consequences. This hat-based book is one of three by Jon Klassen. The other two, I Want My Hat Back and We Found A Hat are also worth a read and will garner many giggles.

2. The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle

You may consider this longer text picture book too daunting but don’t make that mistake! The Grouchy Ladybug is a win all around. In this story, a proud tiny ladybug’s bark is far worse than his bite and he gets exactly what’s coming to him. This story teaches boys to be thankful and share without being preachy or boring.

3. The Pigeon Needs a Bath by Mo Willems

the pigeon needs a bath by mo willems

Mo Willems’ precarious pigeon is just too eager for his own good. Here, the reader is placed in the difficult position of enforcing the rules with someone who isn’t much into rules. Boys will see the benefit of a bath and how difficult it is to deal with someone who doesn’t listen.

4. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

I’m not sure there’s anyone left in a developed country that hasn’t heard of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It’s a classic picture book and one that always delivers a warm, happy read. It’s a simple favorite that shares food choices and developmental changes too.

5. Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin

Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin

Dragons Love Tacos is a breath of fresh fire air in the world of picture books. Although it appeals to girls and boys, boys will have incredible fun with this story of dragons, tacos, and spicy salsa! Who knew dragons couldn’t handle spicy foods?

6. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

For those who are looking for a unique picture book, look no further than The Day the Crayons Quit. This book is SO TRUE in every way. Kids will feel sympathy towards the less popular colors and the overused colors will make everyone laugh. Also, the longer text in this picture book is easy to handle because the stories and pictures are so fun for little boys (and parents).

7. Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

Parents of boys know they can be just as sweet, if not sweeter, than girls. Boys need to be reminded just how much they are loved and if your boys are anything like mine, they’ll begin inventing their own measurements of how much you love them. I think I’ve heard just about everything…

8. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Although more of an early reader than a picture book, I couldn’t help but include this  wonderful, wonderful classic! Besides, sometimes you just need to break the industry boundaries! The first time I read this to my older son, it fell flat. I loved it but he didn’t seem to mind it much. But, after a second and third go-around, it really grew on him! Later he began asking me to read it and the more we read it, the faster we could blaze through the tongue-twisting fun! It’s become one of my favorites and has fit itself into all sorts of situations.

9. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems

Another hilarious book from Mo Willems that puts the reader in the drivers seat. My boys shouted and yelled and laughed at the pigeon’s crazy antics. Through it all, it’s a perfect example of how to Write Picture Books Without Being Preachy!

10. The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone

The Monster At the End of This Book by Jon Stone

Again, more of an early reader than a picture book, The Monster at the End of This Book is worthy of inclusion! I didn’t think I would like this book when I first saw it. But I did! It’s fresh enough to read multiple times because little boys find it so funny! This classic from Sesame Street really makes reading fun. Be prepared for a suspenseful ride through warnings about turning pages and a special surprise at the end.
